Our guide to choosing the best boiler service plan

A boiler annual service plan can save you money and, ultimately, provide you with the priceless advantage of peace of mind. But it can be difficult to know which one to opt for with so many different types of boiler services available on the market. We take a look in this article at why you might want a boiler annual service plan, which types are available and which of them might be the right option for you.

Types of boiler annual service plan

Depending on the type of boiler service plan you choose to go with, you get a different level of service and it’s important to know which one would best suit you. Some of the options are:

Boiler insurance cover

Some insurance policies cover your boiler, usually as an optional extra rather than as part of the standard policy. However, just because you have your boiler covered on your insurance doesn’t necessarily mean that you are covered for general breakdowns and repairs, and it’s unlikely to include an annual service plan. So this kind of cover can be great for a boiler that fails and needs replacing but may not help you in any other way.

Independent boiler cover

You can take out cover for your boiler independently of any other insurance, and this service is often offered by large corporate businesses like your gas supplier. However, be sure to check whether it is just your boiler that is covered, or whether your central heating system, wiring, plumbing and drains are included – you may decide that you don’t want this level of boiler cover, but it’s best to know from the outset what you are covered for. This type of boiler cover usually includes an annual service and maintenance check, and there is often a service for a 24/7 call-out in the case of break-down.

Boiler cover through heating engineers

Some smaller heating engineering businesses like toasti offer a boiler annual service plan. This is usually an agreement where one of our Gas Safe registered engineers services your boiler each year at a time that suits you. If you have a breakdown at any time we will carry out any boiler repairs or maintenance as part of that cover – all you pay for is any parts required.

Which cover is best for you and your boiler system?

There are some things to consider when choosing a boiler annual service plan or a more comprehensive cover, and we’ve outlined some of those considerations below:

<What does your warranty cover?

A warranty usually covers your boiler for the first years of its life for repair and breakdown. This means that if you have a relatively new boiler you probably don’t need to take out a full insurance-type cover. However, a warranty won’t include an annual service so you may want to consider putting in place an agreement with a local heating engineer to ensure that your boiler is maintained and serviced to keep it running well.

Which parts of your system do you want covered as part of your plan?

If your boiler is responsible for your central heating as well as your hot water, if you are taking out cover you will want to ensure that all parts of the system are included – otherwise you may find that, in the event of a breakdown, you are treated as a normal emergency call-out and charged a higher rate.

Is the boiler service included?

It is possible to find boiler cover for a low monthly payment, but always read the small print as you will often find that the cheapest options do not include a service plan, which is critical to keeping your boiler working efficiently and getting the most from its working life.

Too good to be true?

It is often said that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Some of the things to check for in the small print of your boiler cover include: whether you are limited on the number of call-outs you can make in any given period; what the excess is – if repairs are likely to be relatively low cost then an excess makes the overall cost-savings worthless; whether the price is an introductory rate and you will then see a massive hike after the initial period of cover, making the cover ultimately more expensive.

Choosing the best boiler service plan

The main benefits of putting in place an annual boiler service plan are twofold. Firstly, it ensures that an annual service is carried out on your boiler without you having to remember yourself each year, which will keep your boiler and central heating running smoothly and efficiently, keeping your energy bills at a minimum. Secondly, it provides you with peace of mind, ensuring that if your heating breaks down in the middle of the night during a cold snap, we will get it fixed for you, or if you run out of hot water just as your in-laws are coming to stay, we’ve got you covered.
